Adding sources

Sources can be added by everyone who may edit the brain: people with full access and with Can edit. On the brain's page, open Add sources. Every source is processed in the background: Custodos reads the text, summarises it and makes it searchable.

   Open the menu

   In the brain, click Add sources, then Upload files. Alternatively, drag the files straight onto the page.

   Choose files

   Choose one or more files, each up to 20 MB. With many files, Custodos uploads them one after another in groups of at most 10.

   Wait for processing

   A progress bar shows how many documents have been processed. You can leave the page; processing continues in the background.

   Check the result

   In the list each document shows Ready, Processing or Error. Files Custodos does not accept appear as Rejected with the reason.

Custodos takes the text from every file, up to 200,000 characters per file. If a file is longer, Custodos shows a notice that the rest of its text is not searchable.

Custodos reads images and PDF pages without a text layer with text recognition. This is done by a model enabled in the workspace that can read images. If none is enabled, processing ends with an error until an admin switches on such a model under Models.

• Text recognition reads at most 100 scanned pages per document. The stored text notes where it stopped.
• Custodos reads scanned PDFs up to 12 MB. A larger PDF without a text layer is refused because it contains no readable text. If a larger PDF only partly has a text layer, Custodos takes that text and the scanned pages stay unread.
• Pages that already have text keep that text. A chart on such a page is not read in addition.

   Click Add sources, then Web page.

   Enter the address

   Enter the full URL under Address and click Import.

   Processing

   Custodos fetches the page, converts it to text and processes it like a file. A PDF at a web address can be imported the same way.

Paste text stores notes, e-mail excerpts or policies directly as a document in the brain. Give it a title under Title (optional), paste the content under Text and click Add.

The text is processed like an uploaded file. Editors can later correct it with Edit text, see Managing documents.

Custodos checks each file on its own. A refused file does not hold up the others.

If the same content is added to the same brain again, Custodos does not create a second document. If you upload a changed file under the same file name, the new version applies. The older one is marked Replaced, stays readable and is no longer used for answers.
